At Sammy’s Milk We Test Every Batch

Another formula brand, this time vegan, recalled formula due to concern over the dangerous cronobacter sakazakii.  It is a British consumer goods company, but the product, manufactured between August 2022 and September 2022, was distributed in the United States, Puerto Rico and Guan.  The villain of this piece, cronobacter, has been found in other formula plants in the past.  We want you to know that we test every batch of our formula, not just for this dangerous bacteria, but several others too.

That Package You Bought? We Tested That Batch Too.

If you buy Sammy’s Milk for your child, we tested that batch for this and several other offenders. In fact at Sammy’s Milk product is tested above and beyond the FDA requirements. That’s because we’re testing to ensure we meet the highest standards – yours.  We get that you want to protect your child from all the dangers out there. We want to deliver the product that allows you to rest easy, knowing you’re giving your child safe and nutritious formula.

In every batch we process, we perform seven different test including tests for cronobacter sakazakii, e. Coli, Staphylococcus (staph), salmonella newport, yeast, mold, and heavy metals.  We perform these tests, not once, but three times during our batch process.

The Big Four Offenders – What They Are

We Test Every Batch for Cronobacter Sakazakii:

Cronobacter Sakazakii is listed by science direct as a foodborne pathogen that causes neonatal meningitis, necrotizing enterocolitis and bacteremia.  It rarely causes disease in healthy adults, but infants, especially premature infants and immunocompromised adults are vulnerable to this organism.  We run multiple tests in every batch to ensure we prevent this culprit from reaching your child.

What most parents don’t know, is that even with all of these precautions, you can accidentally contaminate formula after you open the container.  That’s because cronobacter can be on surfaces in your home like the kitchen counters, the sink, and in water.  The CDC reminds caretakers to clean, sanitize and store feeding items safely.

We Test for E. Coli

WHO explains that “Escherichia coli (e. coli) is a bacteria commonly found in the lower intestines of warm blooded organisms.” That sounds just plain disgusting, yet most E. coli strains are harmless. Since there are also serious strains, we test every batch to make sure our formula is free from disease causing E.coli strains.

Yes, We Test Every Batch for Staphylococcus

The staphylococcus bacteria, or staph is commonly found on the skin or in the nose of lots of healthy people. It doesn’t usually cause a problem, but if this bacteria invades your body, through food, it causes food poisoning with dangerous symptoms for babies like vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration and low blood pressure. Check with your healthcare provider when your child has symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea.

Salmonella Newport? We Test for it Too.

Salmonella Newport is a contagious disease that presents with bloody diarrhea, lethargy, conjunctivitis and anemia.  According to a Purdue.edu article salmonella Newport is most commonly implicated with dairy cow diarrhea, yet when humans contract this disease, it is serious even for healthy adults.  Though Sammy’s Milk does not use cow products, we test every batch to make sure this offender is not present in our product.

Yeast and Mold are Less Scary but We Test Every Batch For Them

Yeast seems like it should be a positive thing, but the wrong type can cause thrush, white patches and a sore mouth as well as diaper rash in babies.  At Sammy’s Milk, we test every batch for the presence of yeast.

None of us want to eat mold if we can avoid it, so of course you don’t want to feed mold to your baby.  Neither do we.  We pride ourselves in providing healthy clean nutrition for your child and we test every batch to make sure no mold got into it.  Though mold may not make your child sick, it can produce toxins that cause other health issues like allergic reactions.

And Yes, We Test Every Batch for Heavy Metals Too

Metals appear naturally in many foods and we are careful with the choice of foods in our formula.  What is important to be aware of, is that when you mix tap water with the formula you may be adding heavy metals into your baby’s meals. Boiling this water will not remove metals, but a water filter can. Before the formula leaves our production, we test every batch to make sure we deliver safe natural formula to your door.

The bottom line is that while reports about formula recalls keep coming out, at Sammy’s Milk, we continue to test every batch for at least seven offenders.  We run those tests not just once, but three times, and we feel pretty good about sending great quality formula to your home.  So stay safe out there, and rest assured we’re working hard to protect your child too.
